Character and Values
What is character? Character is the choices that you make based upon your values. Character is basically who you are. Are you honest, kind and true? Or scheming, mean and conniving? There is an old saying that says, character is what you do when no one is looking.
Values, on the other hand, are the things you believe to be right or wrong based upon what you have been taught.
Your character and values can change over time, they can both be shaped to make you a better soldier, better employee or a better person.
Sometimes character and values can change for the worse. By instilling strong character and values in our young people we will make a better community for us all.
We have a responsibility to instill strong character into our youth. This can be done by holding them accountable for their actions, and by using discipline as way to shape behavior.
Discipline does not always involve spanking a young person. There is time out, grounding, no phone, no video games, and my all time favorite, THE LECTURE.
When my son turned 10, he started acting up in school. Wouldn’t you know, that at that very time I needed 2 new flower beds to be dug. I also needed the basement cleaned out and the garage needed cleaning too.
I ended up with one of the most well-behaved 11 or 12 year old kids you ever wanted to meet. By the way he turned out to be a decent adult.
But don’t be too hard on them, a little bit of good, old fashioned discipline goes a long way.
